Course Description

This in-depth interprofessional course reviews anti-discriminatory practice as a component of culturally competent care of LGBTQIA+ patients. It is important to recognize the impact of the history of discrimination, oppression, and stigmatization of LGBTQIA+ persons on the health outcomes of LGBTQIA+ persons.  The role of language in clinical care and LGBTQIA+ affirmative practices will be taught.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, healthcare professionals will be able to:

  • Describe anti-discriminatory/anti-oppressive practice, especially as applied to LGBTQIA+ populations
  • Identify key issues in the history of health and mental health services that contribute to stigmatization and oppression of LGBTQIA+ populations
  • Describe minority stress and microaggressions in general and with special reference to LGBTQIA+ populations
  • Identify at least two impacts of minority stress and microaggressions on LGBTQIA+ health
  • Describe the varied language related to sexualities and gender identities
  • Identify at least two anti-discriminatory/anti-oppressive practices in health or mental health with LGBTQIA+ populations

At the completion of this activity, assistants, aids, support staff, and pharmacy technicians will be able to:
