Course Description

This required training provides New York mandated reporters the tools to recognize and report instances of suspected child abuse or maltreatment. Recent amendments to Social Services Law § 413 prompted the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to update the curriculum to include trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), bias in decision-making, and identification of abuse/maltreatment virtually. All mandated reporters are required to (re)take this workshop by April 1st, 2025.

Intended Audience

Professionals recognized by New York State and the New York State Child Protective System as holding the important role of mandated reporter of child abuse or maltreatment. This includes many of the professions that are licensed/certified by NYSED & the NY State Office of the Professions & Office of Teaching Initiatives. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this workshop, students should be able to do the following: 

  • Determine if a child shows indicators of maltreatment or abuse, including in a virtual setting 
  • Recognize the impact of trauma and ACEs on children, families, and yourself 
  • Recognize the mitigating effects of the five protective factors on trauma 
  • Recognize the impact of bias on your decision-making 
  • Understand when you have a legal obligation to call the SCR 
  • Recognize how you may better connect individuals and families with services 
  • Know how to prepare to make the call to the SCR  
  • Know how to complete the LDSS 2221A form 
  • Understand your rights as a mandated reporter
