Course Description
To secure the privacy and electronic security of Americans’ health information, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The legislation lays out standards to which nearly all health care providers and health plans must adhere, and also governs the sharing of private information to business associates that provide services with that private health information.
Intended Audience
This course is a general overview of HIPAA standards. All health care provider employees, administrators, etc. should be trained on the importance of the law and how to comply.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, healthcare providers will be able to:
- Recall basic definitions and covered entities in HIPAA
- Implement essential rules and standards that govern the daily use and storage of protected health information
- Perform the basics of compliance, rules and standards for HIPAA
- Evaluate HIPAA breaches
- Summarize enforcement of HIPAA standards
- Explain how HIPAA applies to special cases
- Discuss HIPAA exceptions and enforcement discretion during the COVID-19 pandemic
