This coursework provides school professionals with the appropriate tools to address social patterns of harassment, intimidation, discrimination, and marginalization, including, but not limited to, acts based on race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex. The Dignity Act requires, among other things, that school districts create policies and guidelines that will be used in school training programs to mitigate the development of discrimination or harassment and to allow employees to prevent and respond to these behaviors. The Dignity Act states that it is the policy of New York State to offer all public-school students an environment free from discrimination and harassment. This course encourages school professionals to act for the welfare of the entire school community, protecting the student population through existing legal provisions that create an appropriate educational environment for all students by addressing culture and school climate.
This coursework or training is designed to fulfill the harassment, bullying, and discrimination prevention and intervention training required for certification/licensure under the Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act). The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) was established to protect all students from harassment, bullying and discrimination. It became effective on July 1, 2012 and was amended to include cyberbullying effective July 1, 2013. The target audience for this course are school professionals in the state of New York who are seeking licensure credentials or renewal through their respective Boards.
- Recognize the legal principles that constitute The Dignity Act
- Define culture and school climate, and the variables that impact its normal functioning
- Understand how school climate and culture have an impact on student achievement and behavior
- Highlight the importance of social and emotional factors in educational development
- Learn the importance of implementing a code of conduct that is adapted to the school reality
- Recognize students with special needs and guarantee an adequate environment for their normal development and learning
- Learn about the variables that affect immigrant and refugee children, and thus consolidate an inclusive school
- Categorize as unacceptable bullying, harassment, and discrimination behaviors against students with special needs, refugees, children in foster care, and those that identify as LGBTQ
- Ensure the creation of a safe and supportive school environment for LGBTQ students
- Know the procedures that according to the law must be followed to address bullying, harassment, and discrimination behaviors in schools
- Explain the responsibilities of school professionals in the face of bullying, harassment, and discrimination
- Recognize the professional characteristics that the Dignity Act Coordinator should have
- Promote strategies to improve communication among members of the school community
- Promote the use of restorative approaches and progressive discipline
- Promote the proper use of resources such as the internet
- Recognize cyberbullying and know the measures that must be taken against these behaviors
