Course Description

This course teaches the basics of pressure ulcer or pressure injury (PI) prevention, staging, and diagnosis. The epidemiology, pathophysiology, staging, risk assessment and preventive strategies from a holistic perspective will be discussed. Healthcare providers who work with patients with limited mobility need current evidence-based strategies to minimize the physical, financial, and legal consequences of pressure injuries. 

Intended Audience

This course is appropriate for RNs, LPNs, APRNs, Physicians, and Physicians Assistants. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, healthcare professionals will be able to: 

  • Recognize the importance of risk assessment in the prevention of pressure ulcers
  • Describe the prevalence and regulatory factors of pressure ulcers in nursing practice
  • Discuss the importance of pressure ulcer prevention in any setting
  • Explain basic skin assessment and PI prevention interventions including PI staging, offloading, repositioning, nutritional factors, skin care, and management of comorbid factors
