DEA Requirement FAQs
The requirement applies to DEA-registered practitioners, with the exception of those who work solely in veterinary medicine. It encompasses healthcare practitioners who hold a federally required DEA number to prescribe controlled substances. This includes physicians, dentists, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and other healthcare professionals authorized to handle controlled substances.
During the DEA registration application (initial or renewal), there will be a box to check, attesting that you have completed the one-time opioid continuing education requirement.
The training is a one-time requirement. However, practitioners should stay informed about any updates or changes in DEA regulations that may require additional education in the future.
Yes, certain practitioners are exempt. This includes board-certified addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry professionals and recent graduates from accredited medical, dental, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing schools with comprehensive training in treating and managing patients with opioid or substance use disorders.
The requirements aim to support responsible and safe controlled substance prescribing practices, enhance practitioner knowledge about opioid effects, and improve patient outcomes in the context of the ongoing opioid epidemic.
